Sucking is soothing for infants. Indirectly, Dummies (also known as Pacifiers) can also sooth a stressed parent! Why then are some parents so hesitant to use them?!
In my experience, the use of a Dummy rarely causes breast nipple confusion. Most babies are smarter than we give them credit for. Some babies need to suck more than others and some babies will prefer a certain teat shape. Over time I have noticed more babies prefer the 'Happy Baby' Dummy. It is soft and cherry shaped and stays in their mouth better.
Dummies have their place in the scheme of baby nurturing. They are meant to help pacify a bub, not simply stifle crying. When a baby is initially self settling it is normal for them to cry. It is when the baby seems unable to settle, then by all means offer a Dummy. I recommend using it as a last resort.
A Dummy can become a problem when a baby grows to dependent on it. This usually happens when parents use it to prevent crying at ANY time.
Older babies and Toddlers can control a Dummy themselves and I recommend to use a Dummy for BEDTIME only.
Reflux babies really benefit from sucking a Dummy. It helps to reduce the acid flow into the oesophagus.
Remember, sucking is a soothing action and helps to reduce stress for all.
