We'd do as Rene had advised and we always had the fantastic result ...

As new parents we think we are supposed to know how to care for our baby. It’s instinctual, isn’t it? I’ve learned that the desire to care and nurture is instinctual but the knowledge of how to do it is not. Admitting that and asking for help can be very difficult. The first few weeks at home with our new baby, Nicola, were extremely stressful. We were not coping well at all. On one terrible day I dug out Rene’s card and called her. I asked her to come to my home and help me. Help me with what, I didn’t know. All I knew was that I needed help. I thought she’d come to our home and watch me breast feed, ask me some questions, give some well-meaning advice and then leave. Rene arrived and stayed throughout the evening watching how we interacted with Nicola. She stayed long enough to see Nicola behaving just the way that was stressing us. She showed us how to interpret Nicola’s way of communicating. She handled Nicola with confidence and expertise. Before our eyes we saw our daughter responding! When she left my husband and I were near tears of gratitude. We had been making so many mistakes and we finally felt like we had the tools to cope. We felt empowered and ever so grateful. Since then, we seek Rene’s advice whenever we need it. We even emailed her from overseas. She as never steered us wrong. Even when I thought what we were doing was best and ignored what she advised us, it wasn’t long before I heard Dr. Phil in my ear saying, 'If it’s not working for you, change it!' Now, our baby is seven months old and we have a happy baby and she has two very happy, well rested and confident parents.
