Planning long trips with children in mind is a formidable task. How to cope with a baby or child on a long plane trip, surrounded by many people in a small space, can be daunting. Here are my tips for a calm trip.
I often get asked what a parent should do about potential crying and general unsettled behaviour of a travelling child. Parents ask if they should give the child a sedative as they have had it recommended by friends or even a Medical Practitioner! In my experience this is not needed, nor would I ever recommend it. If you are agitated and worried about the behaviour of your child, then use a 'calmer downer' on yourself!
Certainly children will display some unsettled behaviour during travel. You may well be overly concerned that fellow passengers are annoyed or irritated, but most are very generous and understanding when it comes to children. The best thing to do to help your child stay calm is:
- You staying calm. Children react to your energy. If you get upset, so will they;
- Be sure to take adequate amounts of liquids and food for your little one. This way you can be sure the behaviour is not related to hunger or thirst; and
- Pick a trip that allows for night travel. Your child is more likely to sleep during the night.
Happy travelling.
