When to move a child into a big bed?  Common reasons for transferring a small child to a big bed: Another baby is going to need the cot. The age of the child dictates the move. The child climbs out of the cot.  Let talk about when and how to transition between cot and bed.

Often children wil say they are ready for a bed, but when it actually happens, some toddlers cannot cope with the change. Others discover they can come out and seek attention. Some will have tantrums.  The only time I recommend transferring a toddler to a bed is when a child attempts to climb out of their cot.

Begin by placing the bed mattress on the floor.  Until your child is comfortable sleeping without a cot, don't bother with the bedframe. This way if they move around in their sleep, they won't hurt themselves.  If a mattress is not yet available, lower the side of the cot and have something padded beside the cot, in case the child does fall they'll land on a softer surface.

In the meantime, if your child is happy and secure in their cot leave them there.  Don't move them out until they are ready to do so. In the case of another baby coming along, a porter cot can be very useful for the new baby. Or borrow another cot.
